When I take the time to reflect upon what this year has meant for me, I feel blessed. There have been a lot of firsts; first jazz festival (St. John’s, NF), first solo TV performance (CBC News), first sighting of my brand-new, shiny album on an HMV store shelf (in June)…

It has been a magical and wonderful year, and I would like to thank you all for that.

I lost my father in early July, and only a few days later I was on a plane to Newfoundland to perform at the St. John’s jazz festival. There is no better way to deal with grief and shock than to stand at the most eastern point in Canada, looking out at sea and rocks that have been there for thousands and thousands of years. To see this beauty is to know that there is always hope even in the darkest of times. That the waves will still follow one after the other, and we humans may get to see a few of them while we’re on this earth; and then when we’re gone, perhaps someone else will stand at the same spot on the same shore, and staring out, think the same thoughts…..

To sing is to express joy, sadness, wonder, frustration, and raw emotion in melodic breaths. This year I am once again grateful to be doing what I love. Most of all, to meet and connect with new people who are supportive of what we artists are trying to do.
